Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter) Review

"Guilty Pleasures", the first book in the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton, was a fresh and unique start to a popular series.

I found few flaws in the novel, and I'll get to those later on. Our heroine Anita Blake, whose occupation is an animator, a person that raises the dead, is a vampire hunter on the side of her already turbulant life. She is witty, strong, and courageous, yet also vulnerable and in need of protection, which is one of the flaws I saw whilst reading. Obviously, every person has their weaknesses, no matter how strong they are, but Anita just reverts so effortlesly from killing vampires to hiding in the shadows, that it makes me dizzy. Another thing that made my head spin was Hamilton's way of introducing characters. Rarely is there ever an up-front introduction.

Anita usually says something about someone, and the reader has no idea who she is talking about, which would be okay if she didn't change the subject and forget completely about the character, and have him or her show up later without an explenation. This makes it harder to sympathize with the less major characters, which there are a lot of. Anita encounters a lot of "monsters" in the book, namely vampires and zombies, with the occasional werewolf thrown in. The only vampire she is infatuated with, Jean-Claude, is her love interest, for lack of better term. She obviously doesn't want to love him, but she can't help herself. The primary villain of the novel, Nikolaos, a vampiric little girl who wants Anita and her friends tortured and or dead. Anita keeps comparing her to a demonic Shirley Temple, which I find quite creepy. Some other important characters in the novel include Edward, a human who works alongside Anita. Anita usually cannot decide whether Edward is on her team or not, but she usually ends up fighting alongside him anyway. Ronnie, Anita's best human friend is a sarcastic, fiesty woman who pretty much does whatever she wants, without being a bitch.

The book was interesting enough to keep me entertained and I definitely will be pursuing the rest of the series as fast as I can. Reccomended. 266 pages.

Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter) Specifications

Anita Blake may be small and young, but vampires call her the Executioner. Anita is a necromancer and vampire hunter in a time when vampires are protected by law--as long as they don't get too nasty. Now someone's killing innocent vampires and Anita agrees--with a bit of vampiric arm-twisting--to help figure out who and why.

Trust is a luxury Anita can't afford when her allies aren't human. The city's most powerful vampire, Nikolaos, is 1,000 years old and looks like a 10-year-old girl. The second most powerful vampire, Jean-Claude, is interested in more than just Anita's professional talents, but the feisty necromancer isn't playing along--yet. This popular series has a wild energy and humor, and some very appealing characters--both dead and alive.

Just Average - Linda -
The book was interesting enough for me to finish it, but not to buy any more in the series. Too slow moving for my taste, not enough suspense, not enough romance. I also felt that Anita Blake was not as strong as they portray her to be ("The Executioner"). I would recommend getting this from the library before deciding to buy any of these books.

Great Summer Read! - H. Johnson - Nebraska
Having just finished the Sookie Stackhouse Series, I decided to give Anita Blake a try. I was pleasantly surprised to find the first book well written with promise for the series to be much better developed tham SS.

Proud over myself for finishing this book... - frostydahlia - NY
... because it took a lot of effort! Nothing ever happens and I couldn't get myself to feel anything but irritation over the characters. The back said "what the Da Vinci Code has done for religious thrillers Anita Blake has done for vampire novels" (or something along those lines). What? Are you kidding me? Even though the Da Vinci Code isn't one of my favorite books at least it is entertaining. This one hasn't got anything on Sookie or the BDB. The review on the back also said that the book was "sexy"? What? Where, it was boring as hell! If you are looking for a good vampire novel read Sookie Stackhouse. If you want something more adult, read the Black Dagger Brotherhood.
