Unjournaling: Daily Writing Exercises that Are NOT Personal, NOT Introspective, NOT Boring! Review
I have a rising third-grader who balks at writing assignments so I thought doing some writing work over the summer would help him get into the groove, making the dreaded writing easier come fall.
I chose 120 of the 200 suggestions in this book that I thought were appropriate for him and that he would enjoy; I put those numbers in a jar and I have him draw one each day. He still balks when he hears what the assignment is, but once he gets going he has fun. My son loves the gimicks that take the focus off the blank page and get him involved in working on the problem (like using all the letters of the alphabet at least once).
I have already recommended this book to friends and teachers. I found while reading this book that it gave me other ideas as well, even as far as giving my son observation assignments such as watching people's reactions when they laugh at a joke, as no two are exactly the same. I certainly expect these exercises to make him a better, more comfortable writer.
Have fun with this book!!

fun ideas - catnap -
Many of the entries in this book are interesting and seem usable. I like to get some different writing ideas for the beginning of each year, so I was satisfied with this purchase. I think my 7th graders will enjoy some of these topics.
Fun way to practice writing - Angela Goodwin - Silverdale, WA USA
My son struggled in English class his 5th grade year. I bought some workbooks to help him practice over the summer. He really enjoyed doing the writing exercises in this book. Some of them where very challenging that me and my husband had a hard time doing, but they made you think outside of the box. I highly recommend this book for any kid who is struggling with writing. The fun activities take the pressure off of the grammar and helps kids put their thoughts together and in order before they write.
Great book - Jeffrey C. Turbitt - Phoenix, AZ
This is a great book for getting students to write and think in new ways. I used the prompts as a warm up, especially during the creative writing quarter, and I heard very minimal grumbling. I would strongly endorse this for writing classes for students from grades 5 all the way up to 9.
